Slow Down and Speak UP: How to Create a Successful Public Reading
Ever wanted to read your work aloud, but the idea of standing up in front of a room full of strangers– exposing yourself and your words to potentially hostile strangers–terrifies you? This class will help you discover strategies that help you deal with your stage fright.
In order to be published or promote your work as a writer, at some point you have to crawl out of our safe places and face an audience–be it on radio, television, in a classroom or a smoke filled bar. Reading publicly is as much a skill as writing–think of it as another way to study structure. In this course you will learn how to successfully create that structure for your work.We will examine how to manipulate our bodies to help (not hinder) our reading; how to overcome reader’s block and performance anxiety; choose appropriate reading material, and use time effectively. We will also listen to and critique successful public readers.
